Victor Umeh defends Peter Obi in Amaechi visit row

Victor Umeh clarifies Peter Obi Amaechi visit, dismissing claims that Obi begged Rotimi Amaechi to step down ahead of 2027 elections

Anambra Central Senator Victor Umeh has dismissed reports suggesting that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi begged former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi to step down for him ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Victor Umeh made the clarification on Monday during an interview on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television, where he addressed growing political speculation surrounding recent engagements between both politicians.

The senator described the visit as a “noble” political engagement, stressing that it was normal for politicians within the same political space to engage one another ahead of major elections.

He said Peter Obi Amaechi visit clarification was necessary because the narrative circulating in some quarters was misleading and condescending.

Umeh insisted that Peter Obi is not the type of politician who begs for political support, adding that such claims do not reflect the character of the former Anambra State governor.

The comments come amid heightened political activity within the African Democratic Congress, where both Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi are seen as prominent presidential hopefuls.

Both politicians are reportedly positioning themselves within emerging opposition alignments as parties prepare for internal primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political analysts say such interactions are expected as key figures negotiate alliances and influence within evolving party structures.

The senator’s remarks aim to calm tensions and reframe the narrative around the meeting as part of broader political consultations rather than personal appeals.
