Turaki Confident PDP Will Contest All 2027 Elections as the interim chairman says the party will overcome its crisis and remain a strong opposition force
Chief Tanimu Turaki, SAN, Interim National Working Committee Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed confidence that the opposition party will overcome its internal leadership crisis and participate in every category of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Thursday, Turaki said the PDP remained resilient despite its prolonged internal challenges.
The meeting brought together party leaders to review a recent court judgment obtained by the PDP Board of Trustees and to discuss the party’s political and legal strategy ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The message underscored the party’s determination to remain a major force in Nigerian politics despite months of leadership disputes.
Turaki insisted that no individual or group had the capacity to destroy the PDP, maintaining that the party had survived more difficult periods in its history and would emerge stronger once again.
“No individual or group can destroy the PDP. Compared to the crisis the PDP faced in the past, what we are experiencing today is minor. By God’s grace, we will overcome it,” Turaki said.
He explained that party leaders delayed responding publicly to the recent court judgment because some members of the Interim National Working Committee were away when the ruling was delivered and needed to participate in consultations before a collective position was adopted.
Turaki also assured party members that the PDP would field candidates in every elective office during the 2027 polls, including the presidential election, governorship contests, National Assembly seats and State Houses of Assembly elections.
Drawing context from the party’s history, Turaki compared the current dispute with the 2016 leadership crisis that resulted in the establishment of the Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee following prolonged legal battles over the party’s leadership.
That crisis was eventually resolved, allowing the PDP to remain Nigeria’s principal opposition party.
Turaki further argued that opposition parties often face heightened internal challenges because political divisions tend to favour parties in government, suggesting that the ruling party benefits whenever opposition groups become embroiled in prolonged disputes.
A secondary highlight from the meeting came from Dr Babangida Aliyu, former Governor of Niger State and Secretary of the PDP Board of Trustees, who encouraged members to remain steadfast despite the uncertainty.
“Difficult times often reveal the true strength of an organisation,” Aliyu told party stakeholders, urging members not to lose confidence in the PDP’s future.
The meeting reflects ongoing efforts by the party’s leadership to restore unity following months of internal disagreements over its national leadership and organisational direction.

With preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gathering pace, the PDP faces the dual challenge of resolving its internal disputes while rebuilding public confidence as Nigeria’s leading opposition party.
