The allegation was made by the Kebbi State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Yakubu Ahmed, during an advocacy meeting with the 23 Special Assistants on New Media to Governor Nasir Idris in Zuru.

Ahmed said the government had observed what it described as a growing wave of misinformation and false narratives, which he claimed were being deployed as political tools in the build-up to the next general elections.

Kebbi Govt alleges fake news campaign as it called on its media aides to remain vigilant and professional in responding to misleading information while promoting accurate reporting of government activities.

According to the commissioner, some opposition elements had resorted to misinformation, fear-mongering and what he described as “barefaced lies” in an attempt to influence public opinion ahead of the 2027 polls.

He urged the governor’s media aides to effectively communicate the administration’s policies, programmes and achievements while ensuring that false claims are promptly addressed with verified information.

Ahmed explained that the meeting formed part of a statewide advocacy tour aimed at strengthening the government’s communication strategy and enhancing public engagement across Kebbi State.

He said the engagement in Zuru marked the first phase of the exercise, with similar meetings scheduled to take place in Argungu, Yauri and Birnin Kebbi.

According to the commissioner, the initiative is intended to improve the capacity of the state’s media team to respond swiftly to misinformation and ensure residents receive accurate information about government programmes.

The development comes as political parties and stakeholders gradually begin positioning for the 2027 general elections, with public communication and the spread of information expected to play a significant role in shaping political campaigns.
