Aregbesola Claims He Governed Osun Eight Years Without Owning a House

Aregbesola governed Osun without owning a house, the ADC National Secretary says, claiming he lived in a friend’s home throughout his tenure

National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has claimed that he is the first governor in Nigeria’s history to serve an entire eight-year tenure without owning a personal house.

Aregbesola made the assertion while addressing his supporters in a video on Thursday, saying he lived in a friend’s house throughout his time as governor of Osun State.

“I’m the first governor in Nigeria to rule a state for eight years without owning a house of my own,” Aregbesola said.

“I stayed in my friend’s house for eight years as a governor in my father’s land. Whoever says that what I’m saying is not true should come out and show me the house I own.”

The former Minister of Interior served as governor of Osun State from 2010 to 2018, completing two consecutive terms before joining the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari as a cabinet minister.

During his tenure in Osun, Aregbesola introduced programmes focused on education, youth employment, infrastructure development and social welfare.

His administration also pursued reforms aimed at reducing poverty, improving healthcare and strengthening security across the state.

Aregbesola, once a close political ally of President Bola Tinubu, has in recent years taken a different political path and now serves as the National Secretary of the ADC, one of Nigeria’s opposition parties.

His latest comments come amid increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 general election, with several opposition figures seeking to project their records in public office.

While Aregbesola’s claim about being the first Nigerian governor to serve without owning a personal house has attracted attention, it has not been independently verified.
