The President made the pledge in Akure, Ondo State, during the official transfer of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital complex to the newly established Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital (FUTATH).
Represented by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, President Tinubu urged Nigerians to support the administration’s ongoing reforms, which he said are designed to expand the nation’s healthcare footprint in collaboration with state governments.
Pate explained that the new federal teaching hospital would strengthen medical training, research, and service delivery in Ondo State and beyond. He described the initiative as a bold step towards a modern and accessible healthcare system.
“President Tinubu is determined to change the health and social landscape of this country with focus, courage, and commitment,” Pate said.
“To our health workers transitioning to the federal system, we assure you of our full support — you will be cherished, built, and empowered to serve humanity.”
He also commended Afenifere leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladelusi Aladetoyinbo, and other community leaders for their contributions towards realising the project, describing it as a powerful symbol of partnership between the federal and state governments.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Olamide Adelami, hailed the transfer as a “transformative beginning” for healthcare delivery in Ondo State. According to him, the federal takeover would ensure improved funding, advanced facilities, and integration into national and international research networks.
“This partnership marks a new chapter in cooperative federalism,” Aiyedatiwa said. “Together, we are unlocking life-changing services for our people.”
Prof. Olusegun Ojo, Chief Medical Director of FUTATH, outlined plans for advanced diagnostic services, residency training, and infrastructure upgrades. He stressed that the facility would help reduce medical tourism by providing world-class healthcare locally.
“We are not merely building a hospital; we are shaping a legacy,” Ojo said. “Our motto, ‘Excellence with Compassionate Care,’ will ensure patients are respected, heard, and well cared for.”
The Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, praised both the President and the Governor for what he called a “gift of hope and healing” to the people of Akure. “This hospital will save countless lives and bring medical excellence closer to our people,” he stated.
