Goodluck Jonathan 2027 presidential bid stirs controversy as PDP clarifies party position and presidency highlights challenges ahead.
Goodluck Jonathan 2027 presidential bid has ignited fresh debate within the Peoples Democratic Party, following claims by former Minister of Information Professor Jerry Gana that the ex-president would be the party’s candidate.

The PDP National Working Committee swiftly disowned these remarks, stressing that Gana lacks the authority to speak on behalf of the party.
Jerry Gana made the statement during a recent event in Minna, suggesting Nigerians, weary of recent administrations, desire Jonathan’s return.
He confidently declared Jonathan would contest the 2027 election under the PDP banner.
However, Debo Ologunagba, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, countered Gana’s claims, emphasising the party has capable candidates, especially among southern governors, ready to step up.
Ologunagba stressed that the party remains focused on its forthcoming national convention, with no official endorsement of Jonathan’s candidacy at this time.
The Presidency weighed in, acknowledging Jonathan’s constitutional right to contest but reminding the public of his “dismal record in office.”
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, described Jonathan’s potential candidacy as a return to a “discredited platform” responsible for years of economic challenges.
Onanuga also pointed out the hurdles Jonathan would face both legally and in public opinion, given the legacy of his previous tenure and the fact Nigerians voted him out in 2015.
