Wike PDP 2027 prediction claims the opposition party cannot win the presidential election, saying its focus should shift to rebuilding for 2031
Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike on August 4, 2026, said the Peoples Democratic Party cannot win the 2027 presidential election, arguing that the opposition party needs more time to reorganise and prepare for future contests.

Wike made the remarks during his monthly media briefing in Abuja, where he assessed the state of the PDP and its prospects ahead of the next general election.
The minister said the party’s immediate priority should be strengthening its structure, securing some sub-national victories and building a stronger foundation ahead of the 2031 presidential race.
“I have always said that the PDP can’t win the presidential election now. All we are doing is to win some sub-national seats and organise the party against 2031,” Wike said.
He argued that winning a presidential election requires more than simply participating in the electoral process, stressing that political parties must have the right structure and preparation before seeking to lead the country.
“We must be very clear to people. I don’t like people who think that because it’s just an election, you must win,” he added.
Wike said the responsibility of governing Nigeria requires careful planning, especially given the country’s current challenges.
“Being a president is not to come out today and run to be president, no. We have a crisis and you can’t wake up within six months to be president of a country,” he said.
The comments come amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with major parties working to strengthen their structures and build wider support across the country.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, has remained a key figure in Nigeria’s political landscape following his appointment as FCT minister.
His relationship with the PDP became strained after the 2023 presidential election, when he and other members of the G5 governors group opposed the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

The PDP has not yet responded to Wike’s latest remarks, but party leaders have continued preparations for the 2027 elections while seeking to resolve internal divisions.
