Adamawa PDP Chairmen, 226 Councillors Join APC

Twenty-one Adamawa PDP council chairmen and 226 councillors have defected to the APC, citing consultations and political realignment

Twenty-one local government area chairmen and 226 councillors in Adamawa State, who were elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The mass defection began late on Monday, October 19, and continued into the early hours of Tuesday, October 20, with the affected council officials submitting resignation letters to their respective PDP ward chairmen.

In their letters, the defectors generally cited personal reasons for leaving the PDP, saying the decisions followed consultations with their families, political associates and other stakeholders.

The chairman of Demsa Local Government Area, Akham Jalo, said he consulted his family, political associates, stakeholders and residents of the council before making the decision.

Jalo explained that his decision to join the APC was driven by his desire to align with the political direction of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.

“My decision to join the APC was informed by the need to align with the progressive vision of His Excellency, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, and to attract more dividends of democracy to the people of Demsa,” he stated.

The development was confirmed by the Adamawa State APC Publicity Secretary, Victor Dogo.

Dogo said all 21 local government chairmen, area development administrators and 226 councillors had moved from the PDP to the ruling APC.

“All the 21 local government area chairmen, area development administrators and the 226 councillors in the state have moved into our party,” Dogo said.

He attributed the mass defection to the council officials’ decision to align with Governor Fintiri, whom he described as their political “godfather”.

The council officials were elected on the PDP platform in June 2026, four months after Governor Fintiri had left the party.

They had secured the PDP tickets ahead of the June 13, 2026, local government election and went on to win their respective positions.

Following their inauguration on June 15, there had been speculation that the council officials would eventually follow the governor into the APC.

Their mass defection has therefore not come as a major surprise to political observers who have closely followed the shifting political alliances in Adamawa State.

The latest development represents a significant movement of elected local government officials from the PDP to the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
