Wike: No party can claim opposition status without winning elections

Wike opposition party credibility claim made as FCT Minister says true opposition status depends on electoral victory, not political statements

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stated that no political group in Nigeria can legitimately claim the status of an opposition party without first securing electoral victories, during a visit to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national secretariat at Wadata House in Abuja, Nigeria on Friday, where he met with members of the party’s newly inaugurated National Working Committee.

Nyesom Wike said political credibility in a democratic system is determined by performance at the ballot box rather than political rhetoric or coalition declarations, in what has been described as a firm Wike opposition party credibility claim.

He argued that parties seeking to lead the opposition space must demonstrate electoral success, stressing that political relevance cannot be built on statements alone.

According to him, those who present themselves as leaders of the opposition have not yet proven themselves through successful elections, adding that legitimacy must be earned through voter endorsement.

Wike questions opposition party credibility claim comes amid ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s opposition politics, where various groups have intensified efforts to reposition ahead of future elections.

Wike also used the visit to reaffirm his support for the PDP leadership, stating that his presence at the party secretariat was intended to show solidarity with the new National Working Committee as it works to stabilise and rebuild the party structure.

He acknowledged that the PDP had faced internal challenges but expressed optimism that unity and discipline would help restore its strength, noting that reconciliation efforts were already underway.

Nyesom Wike urged party leaders to reach out to former members who had left the party, suggesting that many remained interested in returning, particularly over concerns relating to political opportunities and party tickets.

He encouraged the leadership to remain focused despite ongoing legal and political disputes, expressing confidence that the party would overcome its challenges through collective effort and determination.

In response, PDP National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed said the new leadership was committed to repositioning the party and rebuilding public trust as it prepares for future electoral contests.

The remarks add fresh momentum to internal discussions within the PDP, highlighting both the challenges and strategic recalibrations facing Nigeria’s major opposition party.
