Senator Theodore Orji Defects from PDP to APC

Senator Theodore Orji defects from PDP to APC, marking a major shift in Abia State politics and boosting the ruling party’s influence

Senator Theodore Ahamefule Orji, the third democratically elected governor of Abia State and former Abia Central Senator, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement was confirmed by his media aide, Mr. Ifeanyi Umere, on Monday, January 5, 2026.

Orji, who represented Abia Central Senatorial District in the Senate from 2015 to 2023, had earlier declared his retirement from active politics but had not officially renounced his PDP membership until now.

The move comes months after his son, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, a former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, left the PDP amid internal party crises.

Analysts had long interpreted the younger Orji’s defection as a precursor to his father’s eventual departure.

Observers note that Senator Orji’s defection further weakens the PDP in Abia State, given his longstanding influence and financial contributions to the party.

His alignment with the APC is expected to strengthen opposition politics and expand the ruling party’s grassroots presence across the state.

No official reason was provided for Orji’s move.

However, political commentators suggest that the defection is a strategic shift that may impact the PDP’s prospects of regaining political dominance in Abia.

Some stakeholders have welcomed the decision as an affirmation of APC’s growing influence, while others expressed concern about the potential erosion of the PDP’s structural base in the state.
