Shehu Sani Backs Rivers Reconciliation but Warns Battle not Over

Shehu Sani hails Rivers reconciliation between Fubara and Wike as good news but warns that the political battle may not be entirely over yet

Rivers reconciliation efforts brokered by President Bola Tinubu have received the support of former senator Shehu Sani, who described the move as welcome news while cautioning that tensions may still simmer beneath the surface.

The truce, which reunited Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike with his estranged political protégé and Rivers State Governor Similayi Fubara, was facilitated during a late-night meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Also present were members of the State House of Assembly who had previously aligned against Fubara.

Reacting on Friday through his verified X account, Sani praised the development, stating, “The reconciliation efforts in Rivers is good news.

Peace needs to return to the state and Fubara needs to return to his seat as soon as possible.”

Despite welcoming the accord, Sani hinted at underlying discontent within Fubara’s support base.

“I know that those who fought for Fubara are not happy and want him to continue fighting,” he said, adding pointedly, “Fubara is Sim and not Comrade Sowore. The battle may not be over but let peace return to Rivers for now.”

The fallout between Wike and Fubara, which erupted after the 2023 general election, has polarised Rivers politics.

While Wike remains a powerful figure within the People’s Democratic Party and wields federal influence, Fubara has tried to assert his independence, prompting intense legislative and political confrontations in the state.

Tinubu’s intervention appears to have momentarily doused tensions, but observers remain cautious about the durability of the agreement.

Sani’s remarks reflect this uncertainty, acknowledging the need for peace without ignoring the possibility of a renewed power struggle.

The coming weeks will test the strength of this fragile reconciliation and determine whether the political peace in Rivers State is sustainable or merely a temporary truce.
