Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso met NDC governorship, senatorial and other candidates in Abuja on August 31, 2026, to boost grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections
Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Gregory Obi and former Kano State Governor and NDC vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso met with the party’s governorship, senatorial and other candidates in Abuja on Monday, August 31, 2026, to strengthen grassroots mobilisation and expand the opposition party’s reach ahead of the 2027 general election.

The strategic meeting, held at the Obidient Headquarters in Abuja, brought together candidates from different states as the NDC begins turning its national campaign structure into a more extensive operation at constituency level.
Obi disclosed the meeting in a post on X on Tuesday, saying the discussions centred on taking the party’s message of what he described as “national redemption” beyond major cities and into rural communities and the hinterlands.
“Our discussions focused primarily on strategies to expand and deepen the reach of our party and take our message of national redemption to rural communities and the hinterlands,” Obi said.
The meeting comes as the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket seeks to translate the political appeal of two prominent opposition figures into an organised national campaign.
Obi and Kwankwaso formally joined the NDC in May after leaving the African Democratic Congress. Their arrival represented a significant opposition realignment ahead of the 2027 contest.
The NDC subsequently zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term, paving the way for Obi to emerge as the party’s presidential candidate, with Kwankwaso as his running mate.
The arrangement has given the ticket an unusual geographic dimension, pairing Obi’s strong support base in parts of southern Nigeria with Kwankwaso’s established political network in the North.
Kwankwaso, who previously contested the 2023 presidential election under the New Nigeria Peoples Party, has also been presented by the NDC as a central figure in its effort to broaden the ticket’s national appeal.
In May, Obi pledged that Kwankwaso would have a substantive role in government if the ticket wins in 2027, saying the vice president would be a partner rather than a ceremonial deputy.
The latest meeting suggests that the partnership is now moving beyond the announcement of the ticket towards the more demanding task of building a campaign structure capable of reaching voters at ward and community level.
Obi said he had reassured the party’s candidates of his continued support in their states and constituencies.
He also promised to work with them on the groundwork required to secure electoral victories for the NDC.
“My partnership with His Excellency Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is a partnership to rescue Nigeria from the calamitous and ineffective leadership that has brought our country to its present condition,” Obi said.
The policy message outlined by Obi was similarly broad.
He said the proposed administration would prioritise lifting vulnerable Nigerians out of poverty, reducing the number of out-of-school children, supporting small and medium-sized businesses, improving national security and promoting greater national unity.
The NDC also intends to shift the economy from what Obi described as consumption towards production, a theme that has featured prominently in his political messaging since the 2023 presidential election.
The emphasis on grassroots organisation is significant because the 2027 contest is expected to involve a far more competitive opposition landscape than the 2023 election.
Recent activity indicates that the NDC is already seeking to build voter networks around the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket.
In August, the party’s South-East caucus in the Federal Capital Territory said it was targeting at least one million voters of South-East extraction in Abuja.
The party has also been working to consolidate its internal structure.
In May, NDC delegates in Abuja affirmed the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket at a special convention, with the party describing the pairing as part of a broader effort to build a national political movement.
Kwankwaso has meanwhile framed his alliance with Obi around the need for a different approach to governance, citing pressures including rising food prices, unemployment, high business costs and insecurity.
The opposition partnership also carries an important political understanding about the presidency beyond 2027.
Kwankwaso said in July that Obi had signed agreements committing him to a single four-year term if elected, after which the NDC would support the return of the presidency to Northern Nigeria in 2031.
For now, however, the immediate challenge for Obi and Kwankwaso is electoral organisation.
The Abuja meeting signals an effort to move the campaign closer to communities where national political messages must compete with local concerns about livelihoods, security, education, transport and access to opportunity.
The success of the Obi-Kwankwaso grassroots push will ultimately depend not only on the visibility of the two candidates, but on whether the NDC can build durable structures across Nigeria’s states and constituencies.

With the 2027 election approaching, the opposition ticket is therefore beginning a crucial phase in which political momentum must be converted into organisation, local engagement and votes.
