Peter Obi Fires Back Over Social Media President Jibe

Peter Obi fires back at Nyesom Wike for branding him a social media president, calling it a desperate move to stay relevant amid growing public support.

Peter Obi social media president taunt by FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has drawn sharp rebuttal from Obi’s camp, as his supporters accuse Wike of using the former Anambra governor’s name for political relevance.

Dr Yunusa Tanko, Obi’s media aide and National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, said the movement was unmoved by Wike’s remarks, describing them as an attempt to “sell his market.”

“Let me tell you something. How will Wike sell his market if he doesn’t mention Peter Obi?” Tanko said while speaking from Nnewi, Anambra State, where Obi’s supporters gathered for a town hall meeting. “Wike is the least of our worries now.”

The minister had, during the commissioning of road projects in Abuja’s Mabushi District on Thursday, branded Obi as a “social media presidential candidate,” accusing him of playing politics with national issues after Obi visited a dilapidated school in the FCT and criticised its condition.

Wike dismissed Obi’s comments as political posturing, arguing that Obi had no moral ground to criticise public infrastructure, given his own record as a two-term governor.

“Peter Obi, you were governor for eight years,” Wike said. “Instead of developing Anambra, you put the money in the bank where you had interest, looking for profit while the state suffered.”

In response, Tanko said Obi only “stated the obvious” about the state of public infrastructure in the capital.

“I was on the ground with him. The school building is falling apart. The road leading there is in a sorry state. He spoke the truth. Wike should stop ranting and face governance,” Tanko added.

Tanko also addressed Wike’s swipe at Obi’s leadership of the Labour Party, insisting the party remains unified and focused, especially at grassroots level.

“Right now, we’re in a strategy session with our unit commanders in Anambra. The crowd here speaks volumes. If Wike is doing so well, he should focus on delivering, not attacking Peter Obi.”

Wike had further accused Obi of being an unstable politician and a failed party leader, saying, “You will continue to contest as President on social media, but not as President of Nigeria.”

The spat between the two political figures has reignited debate on the relevance of online political movements and the influence of youth-led support groups like the Obidient Movement.

While Wike touts physical infrastructure as his legacy, Obi’s camp continues to frame him as a symbol of transparency and people-focused politics

As the political landscape heats up ahead of future elections, the Peter Obi social media president narrative appears less a jab and more a reflection of the growing tension between traditional power brokers and a rising, digitally engaged electorate.
