The hybrid-electric buses, revealed at a ceremony in Abuja, are part of a wider initiative to usher in eco-friendly mobility across Katsina’s major cities — including Katsina, Daura, and Funtua.
Powered by both diesel and electricity, each bus boasts a passenger capacity of 45 to 55 and is designed to cut emissions, reduce fuel costs, and improve intra-city movement. Governor Radda’s administration sees this as more than a transit upgrade — it’s a statement of intent.
The project, developed in partnership with Chinese firm Woerka Nigeria Limited and supported by Ben 10 Equipment Company, comes exactly one year after Radda’s strategic visit to China to secure technology-focused partnerships.
At the event, held at Woerka’s facility, President of Ben 10 Equipment Company, Oshi Bernard, praised Radda’s leadership, calling him “industrious” and “focused,” and described the bus rollout as a testament to his vision for a cleaner, more efficient Katsina.
“This initiative is a transformational leap forward,” Bernard said. “We’re proud to be part of this world-class project.”
The first phase will see 30 hybrid city buses on Katsina’s roads. Zhong Tong Bus, the manufacturer, confirmed it would also build three bus terminals and 60 bus stops to support the roll-out.
According to Project Manager Wei Yanbin, the system will be delivered within six months, beginning this October.
He added that the hybrid mechanism — combining diesel and electric power — will sharply reduce fuel consumption and cut carbon output, making it both economically and environmentally sustainable.
