Oluremi Tinubu raises ₦20.4bn for delayed library project

Oluremi Tinubu National Library Fund raises ₦20.4bn in a week as First Lady’s birthday appeal inspires support for long-stalled Abuja project

Oluremi Tinubu National Library Fund has raised an impressive ₦20.4 billion in just one week, a significant boost to the long-delayed national project in Abuja.

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, revealed the figure during a media briefing at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, on Tuesday.

The fund, launched ahead of her 65th birthday on 21 September, is dedicated to the completion of the National Library headquarters, a project stalled for nearly two decades.

Speaking with optimism, Mrs Tinubu stated, “So far, we have raised ₦20.4bn since this fund launched last week, and more are still coming.”

She had earlier asked that well-wishers donate to the Oluremi\@65 Education Fund instead of sending birthday gifts or placing advertisements in her honour.

The initiative, coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Education, marks one of the most promising public-led efforts to revive the project, which began in 2006 but has languished due to poor funding and cost overruns.

Originally awarded for ₦8.59 billion, the 12-storey structure now requires upwards of ₦120 billion for completion, according to latest estimates.

Situated between the National Mosque and National Christian Centre in Abuja, the incomplete National Library has come to symbolise years of administrative neglect and unfulfilled promises.

The Oluremi Tinubu National Library Fund is seen as a turning point.

“This will be the best birthday present I have ever received,” she said, reaffirming her long-standing commitment to education and literacy development.

Earlier this year, the Federal Government tasked TETFund with resuming work at the site. Education Minister Dr Tunji Alausa assured the public that work would restart by 1 June, following new assessments.

The Nigerian Library Association also backed the First Lady’s efforts, reiterating the library’s importance for national research, academic integrity, and cultural preservation.

Known for her advocacy in education, women’s empowerment, and youth development, Mrs Tinubu’s leadership has added new urgency and visibility to the cause, bringing both national and international attention.

With support building and funds flowing in, stakeholders hope the Oluremi Tinubu National Library Fund will finally deliver on a promise made over four decades ago.
