2027 Nigerian Presidential Election focus as Peter Obi downplays governor influence, saying past results prove voters decide elections
Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has said that the support of all 36 state governors would not determine the outcome of the 2027 presidential election, insisting that voters ultimately decide electoral results.

Obi referenced his performance in the 2023 presidential election, where he said he won 12 states despite not having the backing of any sitting governor at the time.
The 2027 Nigerian Presidential Election remark formed part of his broader reflection on Nigeria’s evolving political dynamics, as he positioned himself for another bid for the nation’s highest office.
Obi argued that electoral success is not dictated by political structures controlled by state governors, stressing that popular support remains the decisive factor in national elections.
He further claimed that discrepancies in the 2023 results affected his final tally, insisting that he was denied victory in two states due to what he described as electoral irregularities.
The former presidential candidate also cited figures from the previous election, noting that the All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party each secured 12 states, while Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso won Kano State.
Obi finished third in the 2023 presidential election, polling 6,101,533 votes in a tightly contested race.
