In a statement released on Thursday from Abuja, the First Lady extended heartfelt sympathies to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and to the families of the ten victims who tragically lost their lives in the Broad Street fire.
“I condole with Governor Sanwo-Olu, the people of the state, and affected organisations, including FIRS and UBA, over the tragic fire at Afriland Towers,” she said.
Mrs Tinubu also extended her condolences to staff and management of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, United Capital, and United Bank for Africa, all of whom had offices within the six-storey commercial building affected by the blaze.
The Oluremi Tinubu Afriland fire condolence message included prayers for the peaceful repose of the deceased and strength for bereaved families: “May God Almighty comfort the families, colleagues, and loved ones of the departed and the injured during this time of deep grief and pain.”
Tuesday’s fire, now considered one of the worst in Lagos Island in recent years, began in the inverter room of Afriland Towers.
The smoke quickly spread through the stairwells and emergency exits, trapping occupants.
Emergency services confirmed at least ten fatalities, with several others sustaining critical injuries.
This incident, which occurred alongside another fire in the Lagos Island business district the same day, has reignited public concern about fire safety in high-rise commercial buildings.
Videos of the inferno circulated widely on social media, initially sparking panic that UBA’s headquarters at Marina had been affected.
The bank later clarified that only a Broad Street branch sustained damage.
