The former vice-president made the statement on Saturday via a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, following a strategic meeting with Gombe stakeholders led by ex-minister and senator, Idris Abdullahi.
Abubakar lamented the disconnect between Nigeria’s wealth and the economic hardship faced by its citizens, attributing the crisis to decades of failed leadership and electoral malpractice.
“Yesterday, I vowed to stand against the stealing of elections and oppose bad governance,” he wrote.
He added that the new opposition coalition under the ADC will “work assiduously” to deliver meaningful change that prioritises citizen welfare and democratic accountability.
Abubakar praised the calibre of interim leadership driving the ADC coalition, describing it as a credible team with the integrity and competence required to restore trust in public institutions.
“The quality of the interim leadership shows that we are ready to bring integrity to the process and give Nigerians the responsible leadership they deserve,” he said.
He also acknowledged the Gombe stakeholders’ public declaration of loyalty and their formal decision to join the coalition through the ADC platform.
Atiku reflected on his longstanding ties to Gombe politics, recalling his role in supporting the election of Danjuma Goje as governor in 2003 — a decision he believes helped lay the foundation for the state’s development.
“The group reminded me that I laid the foundation for the development of Gombe when I supported the election of Danjuma Goje as governor in 2003,” he noted.
Atiku Abubakar and other opposition leaders recently agreed to adopt the African Democratic Congress as the umbrella platform for contesting the 2027 elections — signalling a new direction in Nigerian opposition politics.
