The four-kilometre walk, themed “Walk for Hope, Walk for Life,” was organised to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It began at The Nest Resource Centre and was led by the APC National Youth Leader, Dr Dayo Israel.
In his remarks, Israel stressed the urgency of early detection and self-awareness in reducing the impact of breast cancer in Nigeria. He applauded the current administration for making historic progress.
“We joined the fight against childhood and adolescent cancer. This government has shown leadership — the 2025 budget has the highest ever allocation for diagnosis and treatment. Women should know their bodies and act quickly. Awareness and early detection save lives,” he said.
Also present was the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, who praised the initiative and urged Nigerians to take personal responsibility for their health.
He revealed that eight in ten breast cancer cases in Nigeria are detected late — a reality that continues to cost lives.
“Check-ups, preventive care, and healthy living should be part of our national culture,” he urged.
Professor Abidemi Omonisi, President of the Nigerian Cancer Society, stated that breast cancer alone accounts for nearly half of all cancer cases in the country.
He emphasised the importance of grassroots efforts and community outreach, commending the APC Youth Wing for driving that change.
Free medical screenings were offered to participants at the conclusion of the walk — an act organisers said symbolised the event’s broader goal: improving access to early detection and health education.
More than just a march, the walk represented a powerful call to action, uniting citizens around a shared cause that transcends politics.

It reinforced the message that fighting cancer begins with awareness, and that youth-led movements can shape the nation’s health future.
