Senate President Godswill Akpabio has petitioned the Department of State Services, DSS, over a fake statement circulating on social media and falsely attributed to him, in which he was portrayed as making anti-Northern remarks.
Akpabio, through his office, denied making the statement and described the publication as false, malicious and divisive.
The Senate President urged the security agency to investigate the origin and circulation of the purported statement and identify those responsible for producing and distributing it.
According to his office, the publication was deliberately designed to create tension and damage his relationship with Nigerians from the northern part of the country.
The development comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with social media increasingly being used to circulate political claims and counterclaims.
Akpabio’s office warned members of the public against believing or sharing unverified statements attributed to the Senate President, particularly materials presented as official communications without confirmation from his office.
The Senate President has faced similar incidents involving fabricated statements in the past. In the latest case, however, his office is seeking an investigation to establish the source of the latest publication and possible motives behind its circulation.
The petition to the DSS underscores the Senate President’s position that the purported remarks did not originate from him and should not be used to fuel division along regional lines.
Authorities are expected to determine the origin of the material and whether any offences were committed in creating or circulating the alleged fake statement.
