The Osun State Governor has urged both nations to pursue “calm and constructive dialogue” instead of confrontation.
In a statement released in Osogbo and published on the state government’s website on Sunday, Adeleke described Trump’s threat of “security and diplomatic actions” against Nigeria as regrettable but resolvable through sustained diplomacy.
“I appeal to the Presidency of the United States of America to support Nigeria to fully implement the recently developed national security strategy,” he said. “The new strategy is comprehensive and capable of taking on the monster of banditry and terroristic killings in many parts of the country.”
The statement, signed by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, was also shared on the state’s official X handle on Monday.
Expressing sympathy for victims of violence across northern Nigeria, Adeleke said the situation “is a wake-up call to rigorously implement new security measures and forceful counter-terrorism actions in partnership with diplomatic allies.”
He stressed that Nigeria required international collaboration rather than condemnation. “We need help from the United States and others to solve the terrorism challenge,” he added.
“A high-powered engagement at the presidential level will open to the American government the ongoing security operations, successes and challenges Nigeria faces in the fight against terrorism.”
Adeleke emphasised that diplomacy — not hostility — should define Nigeria’s response to the United States. “Peaceful interface between Abuja and Washington holds the key rather than military intervention by the American government,” the statement read.
The governor commended the Federal Government’s efforts to de-escalate tensions, urging citizens to support national leadership in tackling internal and external threats. “This is the time to unite as a nation to support the President to enforce the Constitution, deepen democracy and protect citizens. We need peace, not war,” he said.
The Ademola Adeleke US-Nigeria dialogue statement comes as Nigeria faces renewed diplomatic pressure after President Trump designated the country a “Country of Particular Concern” for alleged persecution of Christians — a move swiftly rejected by President Bola Tinubu, who maintained that religious freedom remains a core national value.

With Adeleke’s call for calm, attention now shifts to how Abuja and Washington will navigate the next phase of a potentially tense but critical relationship between Africa’s most populous nation and its long-standing ally.
