Former Plateau Assembly Speaker Peter Azi dies at 58. His family announced his death on August 13 without disclosing the cause
Former Plateau State House of Assembly Speaker Peter Azi has died at the age of 58, with his family announcing his death in Jos on Friday, August 14, 2026.

John Azi, a family member, disclosed that Peter Azi died on Thursday, August 13, although the family did not state the cause of death.
“With total submission to the will of God Almighty, the Azi Ajang family announces the passing unto glory of their son, brother and father, Mr Peter Azi, the former Speaker of Plateau House of Assembly,” John Azi said.
“He peacefully joined his creator today, August 13.”
Peter Azi represented Jos North-West Constituency in the Plateau State House of Assembly and emerged as Speaker of the eighth Assembly after securing the All Progressives Congress ticket.
He assumed the leadership of the House in June 2015, taking charge at a politically significant period for the Plateau legislature.
Azi remained Speaker until July 2018, when his colleagues removed him from office.
His death marks the loss of a former legislative leader who played a prominent role in Plateau State politics during his time in the Assembly.

The family has not yet announced details of his funeral arrangements.
