ADC Blames APC for Undermining Democracy in Nigeria

ADC blames APC for undermining opposition parties, warning that defections and legal tactics threaten Nigerian democracy ahead of 2027 elections

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, on Friday accused the All Progressives Congress, APC, of systematically undermining Nigerian democracy, citing defections of opposition governors as evidence.

ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi spoke during an interview on Arise TV in Abuja, asserting that the moves by governors were driven by personal convenience rather than political conviction.

“We don’t have any governors because these governors joining the ruling party are not convinced about anything in APC. They are pandering to vulnerabilities or looking for an easy way out.

It takes conviction, character, and courage to join the opposition while holding office, and these individuals lack that,” Abdullahi said.

He criticised the APC for projecting the 2027 elections as a predetermined outcome and described the party as the “greatest threat to Nigerian democracy.”

Abdullahi alleged that the APC was deliberately destabilising opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party, while uniting governors under its banner.

Abdullahi highlighted the recent wave of defections, including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State in April 2025, Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom in June, Peter Mbah of Enugu in October, Douye Diri of Bayelsa in November, and Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers in December.

He claimed these movements reshaped political alignments in several states, benefiting the ruling party at the expense of democratic choice.

Despite these challenges, Abdullahi said the ADC had grown rapidly, establishing headquarters in 28 states within five months solely through grassroots support, without holding political office.

He warned that the APC’s selective use of legal and political tools to weaken opposition risked creating a one-party system in Nigeria.

“The destabilisation of PDP, Labour Party, and SDP has forced politicians to seek refuge in the ADC.

The APC wants to present Nigerians with no credible choice in 2027. Their actions back home contradict their purported support for democracy abroad,” Abdullahi said.

He concluded by reaffirming the ADC’s commitment to protecting democratic values and warned against attempts to challenge the party’s registration with the Independent National Electoral Commission.
