Tinubu Assures Nigerians on 2026 Tax Reforms

President Tinubu assures Nigerians that 2026 tax reforms will ease burdens on low-income earners, small businesses, and the poor

The assurance was delivered on Tuesday at the 8th Annual Senator Abiola Ajimobi Roundtable and the 76th posthumous birthday lecture of the late former Oyo State governor, held at the University of Ibadan.

The event, themed “Pathways to Electoral Credibility: Reforming Political Parties, Re-engineering Citizens, and Restoring Trust in Nigerian Democracy,” was organised by the Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation in collaboration with the Institute of Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ibadan.

Friends, associates, family members, and partners of the late governor attended, with the proceedings chaired by former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba.

Speaking through the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Zaccheus Adedeji, Tinubu commended Ajimobi’s governance, emphasising the late governor’s commitment to taking difficult decisions for long-term development.

“Recent economic reforms undertaken by our administration were necessary to revitalise the economy,” Tinubu said.

“Investors have reaffirmed confidence as the fruits of our reforms become manifest through robust macroeconomic indicators. Our GDP is growing, inflation is tumbling, and fiscal deficits are improving. Companies previously posting losses have returned to profitability.”

The President added that the impact of these reforms would be increasingly felt next year through the new tax laws, which exempt food, medication, education, agriculture, and shared transportation from burdensome taxation. Businesses will also be relieved from multiple taxation.

“There should be no apprehension about the new tax laws,” Tinubu said, “as they bring significant benefits for Nigerians across all walks of life.”

He further praised Ambassador-designate Florence Ajimobi, widow of the late governor, for sustaining her family’s legacy, and urged leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress in Oyo State to unite ahead of the 2027 elections. “The best tribute to our departed statesman is to strengthen the party to take over government in 2027,” he said.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, represented by his deputy Bayo Lawal, described the roundtable as a fitting platform to honour Ajimobi’s legacy while addressing critical issues affecting Nigeria’s democracy.

Former Chief of Staff to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, Prof Ibrahim Gambari, delivered the lead paper, identifying political party reform as key to democratic renewal, while highlighting challenges such as voter apathy, electoral violence, and institutional weaknesses.

Other dignitaries at the event included Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, traditional rulers, community leaders, and students.
