Tinubu hails Danjuma at 87, praising his service, leadership and philanthropy in a personal birthday message

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday offered an effusive tribute as Tinubu hails Danjuma on the 87th birthday of former Defence Minister General Theophilus Danjuma, describing the retired army chief as a distinguished statesman who served Nigeria with unwavering loyalty in war and peace.

In a goodwill message personally signed by President Bola Tinubu, he said General Theophilus Danjuma’s life remains inseparable from Nigeria’s post-independence journey, noting that the former Chief of Army Staff stood firm at a time when national unity was fragile and the future uncertain.

The President wrote that the milestone provides an opportunity to reflect on a remarkable life marked by courage, discipline and public commitment.

He said General Theophilus Danjuma’s sense of duty helped steady the nation through its severest trials, adding that his service continues to exemplify honour for younger generations.

President Bola Tinubu also highlighted General Theophilus Danjuma’s influence in public discourse since leaving office, describing him as an elder whose clarity and conviction have shaped national debate.

He said many leaders had drawn strength from the retired general’s willingness to offer guidance whenever the country required a steady voice.

The President further commended the philanthropic impact of the T.Y. Danjuma Foundation, which he said has opened doors for families in need and grown into one of Africa’s most respected charitable institutions.

He noted that through this work, the retired general has extended his legacy beyond military and political service to meaningful humanitarian support.

Calling General Theophilus Danjuma an elder who has lived with purpose and served with courage, President Bola Tinubu prayed for continued health, strength and peace for the Taraba-born statesman.

He expressed gratitude to God for the grace that has carried the retired general through the decades and wished him fulfilment in the years ahead.

General Theophilus Danjuma, who served as Chief of Army Staff from 1975 to 1979 and as Defence Minister from 1999 to 2003, played critical roles during and after the Nigerian civil war.

Beyond public service, he remains a prominent businessman and investor, founding the T.Y. Danjuma Foundation in 2009 to support health, education and economic empowerment across the country.
