The call was made on Tuesday during the 2025 International Accounting Day celebration at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, themed “Excellence, Innovation and Impact.”

Speaking through the Accountant General, Mrs Njum Onyemanam, Governor Otti commended accountants—especially those in the public service—for their contributions to the administration’s development goals.

“The roles expected of them to play are what they are already playing, but they have to sustain it and also continue to improve on the momentum and the impact they are adding in governance.

They have to continue to be more and more accountable, more and more value-adding, upholding the values and ethics of business,” Otti said.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to fiscal discipline, transparency, and responsible financial management, noting that accountants are key to realizing his vision of a “new Abia.”

Speaking at the event, Secretary to the State Government, Prof Kenneth Kalu, also an accountant, encouraged professionals to embody innovation and excellence, reflecting the theme of the celebration.

“Innovation has meaning when it makes life better. Innovation has meaning when it contributes to enhancing service delivery,” Kalu said.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mrs Obi Chianakwalam, urged accountants to move beyond routine practices and embrace new approaches.

“It challenges us as professionals to rise above our routine, to uphold standards, to embrace innovation, to be willing to do new things, not just the old way of doing it, but to be open to change.

Our true value lies in the impact we make,” she said, commending Governor Otti for providing an enabling environment.
