Canada recognises Palestinian state ahead of UN 2025 session, joining France and UK. PM Carney calls it vital for peace, but Israel and Trump react angrily
Canada recognises Palestinian state, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Wednesday, declaring that the country will back Palestinian statehood during the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025.

This landmark decision marks a dramatic shift in Canada’s Middle East policy and aligns the G7 nation with France and the United Kingdom, both of whom have also pledged to recognise a Palestinian state at the same UN gathering.
Carney said the move was essential to preserve the fading hope of a two-state solution and support peace amid the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
“Canada intends to recognise the State of Palestine… to support peace,” Carney declared, adding, “This is being eroded before our eyes.”
The announcement sparked immediate international reactions. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas called it a “historic decision.”
France welcomed Canada’s position, offering to cooperate in reigniting regional peace efforts.
However, Israel strongly condemned the move, labelling it part of a “distorted campaign of international pressure.”
Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump warned of trade consequences, writing on Truth Social:
“That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them.”
Carney clarified that Canada’s support is conditional on the Palestinian Authority undertaking key reforms — including holding general elections in 2026 without Hamas participation, and demilitarising any future Palestinian state.
The prime minister cited the collapse of the traditional peace process, Israeli settlement expansion, and the humanitarian toll of the Gaza conflict as reasons behind the shift.
He said a viable Palestinian state is essential for Israel’s long-term security and peace.
“Any path to lasting peace for Israel also requires a viable and stable Palestinian state,” he said.
The Canada recognises Palestinian state policy marks a pivotal moment in international diplomacy.
