Senator Kwankwaso calls Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s federal alignment “betrayal,” sparking debate over governance strategy versus political loyalty in Kano
Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has sparked controversy by labelling Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s reported political realignment toward the APC-led Federal Government as “betrayal,” even designating 23 January 2026 as an official “Betrayal Day.”

The announcement has generated widespread debate in Kano, with many observers highlighting the irony given Kwankwaso’s own political history.
Critics note that February 23, 2019 the date of Nigeria’s presidential election saw Kwankwaso and opposition figures accused of abandoning collective opposition strategy, raising questions about his moral authority to lecture on betrayal.
Governor Yusuf’s supporters argue that the realignment is not a personal betrayal but a governance strategy.
They maintain that Kano, as a major commercial hub in northern Nigeria, requires strategic engagement with the federal government to secure infrastructure, industrial development, security, and employment opportunities for citizens.
Political analysts emphasise that realignment is a feature of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, where leaders frequently cross platforms to respond to internal party crises or developmental needs.
Kano’s political history, from NEPU to NNPP, reflects strategic recalibration rather than ideological imprisonment.
Critics argue that Kwankwaso’s framing of Yusuf’s decision as betrayal risks reducing complex governance decisions to symbolic theatre, rather than focusing on tangible development outcomes.
Observers insist that Kano voters will ultimately judge political actions based on delivery and results, not slogans or symbolic dates.
As Kano’s political landscape continues to evolve, the debate underscores the tension between loyalty to political movements and the demands of effective governance.

Governor Yusuf’s next challenge will be to demonstrate that federal alignment translates into meaningful development, beyond the theatrics of “Betrayal Day.”
