PDP Condemns Senate’s Backdoor Plot on E-Transmission

PDP criticises Senate over backdoor plot undermining electronic transmission of election results in Nigeria

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Nigerian Senate of attempting to undermine electoral transparency through a “backdoor plot” against real-time electronic transmission of election results.

The accusation came in a statement issued on Tuesday by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong.

The PDP reacted to the Senate’s reconsideration of its position on the Electoral Amendment Bill, which introduced an addendum allowing manual transmission of results in cases where technology fails.

The party described the move as a covert effort to achieve the same objective as the earlier outright rejection of electronic transmission, while appearing to align with public sentiment.

Comrade Ememobong highlighted that manual transmission is already provided for under the Electoral Act and warned that bypassing electronic systems could reintroduce historical election malpractices.

The statement emphasised the reliability of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, which has consistently managed accreditation across Nigeria.

The PDP specifically criticised Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other lawmakers who oppose electronic transmission, arguing that narrow political interests should not override national democratic priorities.

The party urged the Conference Committee to adopt the version of the bill previously passed by the House of Representatives.

Ememobong concluded by appealing to Nigerians to remain steadfast in demanding full electronic transmission, asserting that the country’s hard-won democracy must be safeguarded for future generations.
