In a statement released on Friday, Tinubu described Chief (Mrs.) Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo—fondly remembered as the “Jewel of inestimable value”—as a *“pillar of courage and dignity” whose influence still echoes through generations of Nigerians.

“Ten years may have passed, but the memory of Mama HID Awolowo remains fresh with deep respect in the heart of our nation,” the President said. “She was a pillar of courage and dignity who stood firmly beside Chief Obafemi Awolowo and carried his legacy with uncommon strength.”

Widowed in 1987, Mama Awolowo preserved and upheld her late husband’s towering legacy until her death in 2015 at the age of 99.

Her life was marked by public service, moral fortitude, and unwavering devotion to family and country.

President Tinubu emphasised that her legacy transcends her role as a spouse and mother, positioning her as a national figure of resilience and grace.

“She became a mother not only to her family but also a guiding light for generations of Nigerians who drew inspiration from her example,” he noted. “Mama HID showed us what it means to live with faith, discipline, and love for country.”

He further noted that her enduring contributions to Nigeria’s socio-political fabric reflect a powerful model of selfless leadership.
