Obi, Kwankwaso, Dickson Attend NDC NEC Meeting

Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso and Seriake Dickson attend the NDC NEC meeting in Abuja ahead of the party’s 2027 campaign council inauguration

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and the party’s National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, arrived in Abuja on Monday for the party’s National Executive Committee meeting ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The meeting, taking place in the Maitama area of the Federal Capital Territory, brought together party candidates, senior political figures, leaders and supporters from different parts of the country.

The arrival of the three prominent figures comes as the opposition party prepares to inaugurate its National Campaign Council and strengthen its structures ahead of the next general elections.

Dickson and the NDC National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, received an enthusiastic welcome from supporters, while Obi and Kwankwaso were greeted with a remix of Olamide’s hit song, Wo.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, appeared in his customary all-black outfit with a matching cap.

Kwankwaso, a former presidential candidate, wore a white flowing babanriga and his traditional red-and-white Kwankwasiyya cap.

The NEC meeting forms part of a series of activities scheduled by the party for Monday.

The programme includes the commissioning of the party’s newly acquired national secretariat in Abuja, the inauguration of its National Campaign Council and the presentation of Certificates of Return to candidates contesting presidential, governorship, National Assembly and state House of Assembly elections.

The party is also scheduled to hold a dinner following the inauguration.

The NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, announced the programme in a statement on Sunday, describing the activities as part of the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections.

The gathering will also mark the party’s third NEC meeting.

The NDC had earlier announced plans to present its statement of account at the NEC meeting as part of its commitment to transparency and accountability.

Director said the party’s National Treasurer would present its financial statement, adding that the country’s economic difficulties had affected the party’s finances.

He also claimed that about 80 per cent of the party’s candidates could not afford to pay for Expression of Interest forms because of poverty, hunger and deprivation.

According to him, the party responded by issuing the forms to affected aspirants free of charge.

The activities are expected to bring party leaders and candidates together as the NDC consolidates its organisational structures and prepares for the 2027 general elections.
