Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara returns to Port Harcourt after President Tinubu lifts emergency rule, with supporters urging focus on good governance

Fubara’s arrival at Port Harcourt International Airport at about 12:19 p.m. was met with an enthusiastic crowd of supporters, who had gathered since early morning to welcome him back to office after six months of enforced absence.

The emergency rule, imposed on March 18, was lifted by President Tinubu on September 17, paving the way for Fubara, his deputy, and members of the House of Assembly to resume their duties.

Despite this, Fubara did not immediately resume office on Thursday, much to the disappointment of thousands who had thronged Government House in eager anticipation.

Meanwhile, members of the Rivers House of Assembly held their first legislative session since the lifting of the emergency.

The lawmakers recommitted to bridging administrative gaps caused by the suspension and pledged legislative support to ensure smooth governance.

Speaker Martins Amaewhule emphasised the House’s readiness to back the Governor’s administration and urged Fubara to promptly present the 2025 Appropriation Bill for approval.

Youth leader Mr Savior Oscar, President of the South-South Youths Initiative, commended President Tinubu for ending the emergency rule and called on Governor Fubara to prioritise good governance and the completion of ongoing projects.

Oscar acknowledged the pain the emergency rule brought but hailed the restoration of democracy as a historic moment.

He urged Fubara to remain cautious of political actors seeking to cling to power, warning such desperation could undermine harmony.

The youth leader also highlighted concerns about unpaid entitlements among security aides during the emergency period, urging the federal government to investigate and resolve these complaints.
