The President, joined by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the service chiefs and senior officials, received the remembrance poppy from Morenike Henry, Chairman of the National Council of the Nigerian Legion.
The National Assembly delegation, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, contributed N100m, while the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, donated N20m.
President Tinubu urged government institutions, private organisations and citizens to back the legion, which provides essential care for retired soldiers and widows of military personnel.
He stressed the importance of unity, noting that Armed Forces Remembrance Day serves as a national reminder of service and sacrifice.
Tinubu praised the military for major gains achieved in the past year, stating that tens of thousands of insurgents had surrendered, key terror commanders had been neutralised and many abductees had been freed.
He added that maritime security had improved, with oil theft, piracy and illegal fishing significantly curtailed. The President described these improvements as powerful evidence of Nigeria’s determination to restore peace.
Reiterating that security remains central to the Renewed Hope Agenda, Tinubu highlighted recent reforms, including enhanced allowances, upgraded barracks, expanded healthcare and modernised pension verification systems.
He said these measures were designed to improve welfare and strengthen morale across the Armed Forces.
Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, called on Nigerians to regard the emblem as a symbol of national gratitude, emphasising that wearing it affirms the country’s appreciation for veterans.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Richard Pheelangwa, commended the President’s continued support, saying many communities once battered by conflict were now experiencing renewed stability.
