Seriake Dickson Democracy Warning calls for protection of Nigeria’s democracy as the NDC leader speaks on political challenges ahead of 2027
Former Bayelsa State Governor and National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Seriake Dickson, has said Nigeria’s democracy must withstand ongoing political challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Dickson made the statement on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, in a message shared on his verified X handle, where he expressed concern over what he described as actions capable of weakening democratic progress.
The warning came as the NDC leader accused what he called anti-democratic forces of using legal and political tactics against the party, while insisting that the current difficulties would eventually pass.
Dickson said he remained confident in the judiciary and urged courts to uphold the law and protect democratic values rather than allow themselves to be used to undermine the political process.
The former governor also criticised individuals he said he had supported throughout his political career, accusing some of later using state institutions against former allies and innocent citizens.
He alleged that some actors had engaged in victimisation, propaganda and political actions that contradicted the support and opportunities they previously received.
“Nigeria’s democracy must survive. Multi-party democracy must survive no matter the different odds we may face in the course of returning Nigeria on the right course,” Dickson wrote.
He added that he was encouraged by the growing number of citizens joining the NDC as the party continued efforts to expand its national presence.
“I have watched with immense pride and satisfaction that, while I laboured here with my colleagues to strengthen and build our party nationally, droves of leaders and citizens, men and women, young and old, have continued to troop out to register, join, and actively participate in the affairs and activities of our party,” he said.
Dickson’s comments come as political parties across Nigeria intensify preparations for the 2027 elections, with opposition groups seeking stronger structures and broader support ahead of the contest.

The NDC leader said the party would continue working towards strengthening multi-party democracy and providing an alternative political platform for Nigerians.
