Kano Senator Rufai Hanga Dumps NDC, Leaves Next Political Move Open

Senator Rufai Hanga resigns from NDC ahead of the 2027 election, ending his membership while leaving his next political move undisclosed

Senator Rufai Hanga, a close political associate of former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), marking a notable development within the party ahead of the 2027 general election.

The Kano Central Senatorial District representative announced his decision in a resignation letter dated 3 August 2026 and addressed to the NDC chairman of Dakata Ward.

Hanga, who serves as the Deputy Minority Whip of the Senate, said the decision followed careful consideration and personal reflection, adding that he had chosen to step away from the party to pursue other commitments.

“I am writing to formally notify you of my resignation from the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, effective from today, 3rd August 2026,” Hanga wrote.

“After careful reflection and personal deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my membership from the party to pursue other personal commitments and career paths.”

The senator expressed appreciation to the party’s ward leadership and members for the support and opportunities he received during his time with the NDC.

He also returned his membership card and requested that his name be removed from the party’s official register at the ward level.

“I wish the party and its members all the best in their future endeavours,” he added.

The resignation comes as political parties and key figures continue to reposition themselves ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections, with defections and realignments expected to shape the political landscape in the months ahead.

Hanga has been regarded as one of Kwankwaso’s allies within the political space, having maintained ties with the former Kano governor’s movement.

However, his resignation letter did not state whether he would join another political party or reveal his next political step.

The development represents a fresh challenge for the NDC as parties continue efforts to strengthen their structures and build support ahead of the next electoral cycle.
