APM backs Makinde for the 2027 presidency, describing the Oyo governor as the opposition’s strongest candidate with broad national appeal
The Lagos State chapter of the Allied People’s Movement (APM) has endorsed Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde as the most suitable presidential candidate to lead an opposition coalition in the 2027 general election.

The party made its position known in a statement issued on Monday, 3 August 2026, by its State Publicity Secretary, Ayodele Kazeem, who said Makinde possesses the leadership qualities, governance experience and national appeal needed to present Nigerians with a credible alternative.
According to Kazeem, the party’s endorsement is based on Makinde’s record in office rather than political sentiment.
“APM Lagos firmly believes that if the opposition is truly committed to presenting the Nigerian people with a credible alternative in 2027, then Governor Seyi Makinde stands out as the most qualified, competent and unifying candidate to fly the banner of the coalition,” he said.
Kazeem praised Makinde’s administration in Oyo State, citing investments in road infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture and security, alongside what he described as prudent financial management and economic growth.
“He has consistently shown that public resources can be managed responsibly without unnecessary extravagance. He has proven that development can be driven by planning rather than propaganda,” Kazeem added.
The APM spokesperson also argued that Makinde’s ability to build relationships across political divides and regions of the country makes him a strong contender for a broad-based opposition alliance.
According to the party, the governor’s leadership style, consensus-building approach and executive experience could help unite opposition parties ahead of the next presidential election.
The endorsement comes as opposition parties continue consultations over possible alliances and a consensus candidate capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
While discussions on coalition arrangements have intensified, no opposition bloc has formally adopted a presidential candidate.
Kazeem said the Lagos chapter of the APM was already strengthening its grassroots structures to support the opposition’s electoral ambitions.
He disclosed that the party’s governorship candidate in Lagos, Prince Laja Adeoye, was coordinating mobilisation efforts across the state’s 20 local government areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), with plans to expand voter registration drives, volunteer networks and election-day structures.
The party said its strategy would focus on youth and women mobilisation, digital campaigns, PVC collection and engagement with community organisations, transport unions and faith-based groups.

The endorsement adds to the growing political conversations ahead of the 2027 elections, as parties continue to assess potential candidates and negotiate alliances that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape.
