Putin Issues Warning That Western Troops in Ukraine Are Legitimate Targets

Putin’s warning signals that Moscow will target Western forces if they deploy troops inside the conflict zone in Eastern Europe amid ongoing peace efforts

Putin’s warning intensified on Friday when Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that any Western forces entering the conflict zone in Eastern Europe would be considered “legitimate targets” by Moscow’s military.

This statement follows an announcement from Kyiv’s allies about plans to send troops as part of a peacekeeping mission, should a deal be reached.

Led by France and Britain, two dozen countries pledged to contribute a “reassurance” force that would operate on land, at sea, and in the air to oversee any future peace agreement.

Speaking at an economic forum in Vladivostok, Putin warned that the presence of foreign troops during ongoing hostilities would prompt military action.

“If some troops appear there, especially now during the fighting, we proceed from the premise that they will be legitimate targets,” Putin said.

He added that deploying such forces would harm long-term peace prospects and cited Ukraine’s expanding military ties with Western nations as a root cause of the conflict.

Details about the allied troop deployment remain vague, with no clear information on numbers or contributing countries.

Kyiv maintains that Western-backed security guarantees are crucial to preventing renewed Russian attacks.

Since Moscow’s invasion began in February 2022, tens of thousands have died, millions have been displaced, and large areas of eastern and southern Ukraine have suffered extensive damage.

Putin stated that foreign troops would not be needed if a lasting peace agreement is achieved and emphasized Russia’s intent to honor any such deals.
