Peter Obi hails Ganduje’s Resignation, Urges Leaders to Prioritise Health

Peter Obi praises Ganduje’s resignation, calling it honourable and timely. He urges leaders with health issues to step aside and prioritise national progress

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has praised the resignation of Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a timely and honourable act.

Obi’s comments, shared via his official X account on Friday, follow reports that the former Kano State governor stepped down due to declining health.

While official details surrounding the resignation remain sketchy, Ganduje has reportedly vacated his office at the APC national secretariat in Abuja.

“With his health reportedly in decline, it is both wise and honourable to step aside, knowing that he may no longer be able to render the level of service required by the party, the people, and the nation,” Obi said in his statement.

He added that the decision should serve as a powerful message to other leaders who may be struggling with similar health concerns.

“By this exemplary action, Dr Ganduje has thrown a challenge to other leaders who, due to health-related issues, are no longer able to deliver optimally. I sincerely hope they take a cue from him,” he remarked.

Obi stressed the importance of physical and mental fitness in public service, noting that the country’s fragile situation demands agile leadership.

“Nigeria can no longer afford the burden of medical tourism, long holidays, or absenteeism caused by age-related ailments,” he warned. “These things are taking a serious toll on our development.”

The former Anambra governor concluded by offering prayers for Ganduje’s recovery and peace in retirement. “May God Almighty grant Dr Ganduje a peaceful and fulfilling retirement,” he said.

Meanwhile, APC insiders say the National Working Committee is expected to name an acting national chairman in the coming days.

A national convention has been scheduled for December 2025, during which a substantive replacement will be elected.

Confirming the resignation, Bashir Ahmad, a former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, also posted on X, stating that a national vice chairman would take over in acting capacity until the convention.
