Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, has officially resigned.

The former Kano State governor, who has faced mounting pressure over the party’s internal zoning arrangement, stepped down from the role on Friday.

According to a top source within the Presidency, Ganduje was compelled to resign so the party could return to its agreed power-sharing structure.

Under the APC’s zoning formula, the position of national chairman was meant to go to the North Central zone, not the North West, which produced Ganduje.

The source told The Eagle Online that President Bola Tinubu personally enforced the decision, noting that the integrity of the party’s structure must be restored before preparations for the 2027 elections gather pace.

This was not about personal ambition. It was about preserving the party’s structure and trust.

“The President is insistent that in the countdown to the 2027 elections, the party must enforce all the rules, and one of them is the zone that should occupy the seat of the national chairman,” the source said.

“Ganduje has been told pointedly that he must resign. And he has done just that.”

Despite repeated calls from North Central stakeholders demanding he vacate the post, Ganduje had initially vowed to remain in office.

His resignation marks a significant political shift and a firm signal from President Tinubu that APC’s internal agreements must be respected moving forward.

“This was not about personal ambition. It was about preserving the party’s structure and trust,” said a senior APC chieftain familiar with the discussions.

The party is now expected to nominate a new chairman from the North Central in line with the agreed zoning arrangement, restoring balance to its leadership hierarchy ahead of the next national elections.
