PDP protest organisers gathered at the United States Embassy in Abuja on Thursday, calling for international intervention to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy and prevent the nation from drifting toward a one-party system.

The demonstrators also submitted protest letters to the European Union complex, the Ministry of Justice, and the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters. Videos circulating online show protesters carrying placards with messages such as “Fix PDP, fix Nigeria, save our democracy” and “Stop party opposition intimidation.”
Participants alleged that opposition members have faced increasing intimidation from the ruling party, threatening the country’s multi-party political system. The protest, themed “Save Our Democracy from Intimidation,” was organised by the PDP Like-Mind Group to appeal for both local and global support.
The demonstration comes amid escalating internal divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party. Factions of the National Working Committee have suspended each other in recent days. Over the past weekend, a camp led by Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum suspended National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu and several others, prompting a retaliatory suspension of Damagum and allied officials by Anyanwu’s faction.
The ongoing leadership standoff has deepened fractures within Nigeria’s main opposition party, with both sides claiming legitimacy. Observers say the tension has not only unsettled the PDP internally but also raised concerns about the broader health of Nigeria’s democratic system.

Through the protest, the PDP Like-Mind Group seeks to draw attention to these political challenges and call on international partners to support efforts to protect democratic processes and ensure fair competition in Nigeria’s political landscape.
