Oyo APC ₦300bn loan protest supports lawmaker Shittu’s opposition to secretive approval process, raising debt and transparency concerns
Oyo APC ₦300bn loan protest has ignited political tension across the state, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) threw its weight behind lawmaker Ibraheem Shittu, who is challenging the approval process of a ₦300 billion loan secured by Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration.

Shittu, representing the Saki West constituency, raised the alarm over what he described as an “illegal and secretive” process.
He claimed that the loan was approved without the mandatory two-thirds majority of the House of Assembly and that he was deliberately excluded from the session where the decision was made.
The protest, held in Ibadan on Monday, began at the APC secretariat in Oke-Ado and moved through major streets before ending at Mokola Roundabout.
Addressing a large crowd of supporters, APC State Chairman Olayide Abas praised Shittu’s stance and warned that the ₦300bn debt could burden future generations.
“We are fully behind Hon. Shittu for standing against this questionable loan,” Abas declared.
“Governor Makinde must not plunge Oyo State into unmanageable debt. We demand accountability and transparency.”
Abas also alleged mismanagement of public resources under the Peoples Democratic Party-led government, citing recent increases in federal allocations that, according to him, make such massive borrowing unnecessary.
Shittu has reportedly received threats since making his position public—raising fears of political intimidation.
The APC described the threats as “deeply troubling” and called on security agencies to ensure the lawmaker’s safety.
In response, the PDP in Oyo State defended the loan and the approval process.
Spokesperson Michael Ogunsina stated that the funds are critical to the state’s developmental plans and described the APC’s protest as political drama.
“There’s nothing illegal here,” Ogunsina said. “Oyo is on a clear path to economic prosperity. The APC is only trying to distract the people.”
The Oyo House of Assembly also rejected Shittu’s claims.
In a joint statement, Majority Leader Sanjo Adedoyin and Information Committee Chairman Waheed Akintayo labeled Shittu an “absentee lawmaker,” accusing him of misrepresenting the facts for political gain.
Still, the Oyo APC ₦300bn loan protest has stirred debate among residents and political observers.
