PDP 2027 democracy pledge as party leaders vow alliances and reforms to protect Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the general elections
The Caretaker National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party for the South South, Emmanuel Ogidi, has said the opposition party is prepared to take decisive steps to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ogidi made the remarks in Abuja during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday, as the party intensifies efforts to rebuild internal cohesion and forge broad political alliances.
He said the PDP remains committed to repositioning itself as a formidable opposition force despite ongoing internal disagreements, insisting that such challenges would not derail the party’s core mission.
According to Ogidi, the party recognises the gravity of Nigeria’s current political climate and is determined to meet the expectations of citizens who view the PDP as a stabilising force within the democratic process.
“Yes, there are pockets of trouble within the PDP today, but we are resolute,” Ogidi said. “We believe strongly that we are the only viable opposition capable of defending democracy in this country.”
He warned that a breakdown of democratic governance could push Nigeria towards instability, describing such an outcome as dangerous for national unity and development.
Ogidi said the PDP would engage political actors across party lines, including members of the ruling All Progressives Congress, in a bid to build alliances capable of strengthening democratic institutions.
The PDP chieftain accused the APC of focusing excessively on electoral calculations rather than governance, questioning why political manoeuvring appeared to dominate less than two years into the current administration.
He said the PDP’s central focus ahead of 2027 would be protecting democratic values, promoting national cohesion and presenting Nigerians with a credible and compelling alternative to the ruling party.

Ogidi assured that the party would deploy every legitimate means within the law to prevent the erosion of democratic institutions and restore public confidence in governance.
