ADC Accuses Tinubu of Threatening Democracy Ahead of 2027

ADC Accuses Tinubu of Threatening Democracy as party official Oladimeji Fabiyi criticises the judiciary and raises concerns ahead of 2027

Oladimeji Fabiyi, Deputy National Financial Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has accused President Bola Tinubu of undermining Nigeria’s democratic process, urging the judiciary to protect democratic institutions ahead of the 2027 general election.

Fabiyi made the allegation during an interview on Trust TV on Tuesday while reacting to a recent Court of Appeal decision that upheld an order preventing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising ADC state congresses.

The ADC official expressed concern over what he described as increasing pressure on opposition parties and warned against actions that could weaken Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.

“The judiciary should not help Tinubu to destroy our democracy. We will not allow it,” Fabiyi said.

He further criticised what he described as challenges facing the judicial system, alleging that political developments could push the country towards a one-party system.

“They want to turn the country into a one-party state. It’s not going to work. We are not going to allow it,” he said.

Fabiyi said the party’s legal team was handling the matter in court and maintained that the ruling would not stop the ADC from continuing its political activities nationwide.

“Our legal team are handling whatever is in the court. It does not stop us. We are still going on with activities everywhere,” he added.

The ADC executive also urged Nigerians to pay attention to what he described as wider concerns affecting opposition parties, arguing that the situation extends beyond his party.

“Now, what we need is to ask Nigerians to really understand our situation. It’s not only ADC. We see what they are doing to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. It’s not limited to ADC alone,” Fabiyi said.

The Appeal Court ruling that triggered the reaction followed a legal dispute over the recognition of ADC state congresses by INEC. The matter remains part of ongoing political and legal processes ahead of the 2027 elections.

Nigeria’s opposition parties have increasingly raised concerns about political competition, electoral processes and the role of state institutions as preparations for the next general election intensify.

The Tinubu administration and relevant authorities have previously maintained that democratic institutions operate independently and that legal disputes should be resolved through established judicial channels.

With the 2027 election cycle approaching, disputes involving party structures, electoral recognition and internal processes are expected to remain key issues in Nigeria’s political landscape.
