Osun election violence concerns rise as Governor Ademola Adeleke urges President Tinubu to intervene ahead of the August 15 governorship poll
Ademola Adeleke, Governor of Osun State, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene over alleged political violence in the state, warning that rising tensions could affect the credibility of the August 15 governorship election.

Adeleke made the call on Monday during a campaign rally in Olorunda Local Government Area of Osogbo, where he urged the President to ensure that the election process remains peaceful, transparent and credible.
The governor alleged that residents had been killed amid political tensions in the state and appealed to Tinubu to act as a national leader to prevent further unrest before the poll.
“President Bola Tinubu, something is happening in Osun State that you need to know. Our people are being killed, and as our father, we are appealing to you. We will not accept any attempt to rig this election,” Adeleke said.
He questioned why his supporters were allegedly being targeted despite the support his administration has expressed for Tinubu’s 2027 presidential ambition.
“Mr President, I am passing this message directly to you. We have publicly endorsed you for the 2027 presidential election. What more do you want from us? Why then are our people being killed?” he asked.
Adeleke also criticised the police response to the alleged incidents, claiming that the security agency had not acted impartially and was focusing on innocent citizens instead of addressing criminal activities.
“The police have been compromised. They should concentrate on tackling the kidnappers and other criminals troubling your administration instead of intimidating innocent people,” he alleged.
The governor’s comments come as political parties intensify campaigns ahead of the Osun governorship election, with security and electoral credibility becoming major issues in public discussions.
The concerns follow a series of allegations from political actors over threats, arrests and clashes linked to campaign activities. Authorities have maintained that security agencies have a responsibility to protect citizens and ensure a peaceful electoral process.
Adeleke, who serves as the chief security officer of Osun State, said voters would participate in large numbers and protect their votes during the election.
“With God on my side, I am confident of victory. If this election is free and fair, I will win. I therefore call on President Tinubu to rise to his responsibility,” he said.

The August 15 governorship election is expected to be closely watched as parties compete for control of Osun State amid heightened political activity.
