Sanwo-Olu made the remarks in a statement issued on Thursday, June 25, 2026, where he praised President Bola Tinubu and federal lawmakers for endorsing all 26 clauses of the proposed legislation.
He said the decision represents a major shift in Nigeria’s governance and security strategy, particularly in efforts to combat terrorism, kidnapping and other violent crimes affecting communities across the country.
According to the governor, the approval reflects a long-standing reform vision championed by President Tinubu since his tenure as Governor of Lagos State between 1999 and 2007.
“State Police has been top of mind for President Tinubu since 1999 when he governed Lagos. We are happy to witness its emergence in Nigeria today,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The governor described the Senate’s action as “epochal”, adding that it signals progress in strengthening Nigeria’s federal structure and improving responsiveness to local security challenges.
He commended the lawmakers for what he called a bold and historic decision, noting that decentralised policing would allow faster response to crime and better community engagement in security management.
Sanwo-Olu further expressed optimism that the new policing framework would enhance national efforts against insecurity, especially in areas affected by banditry, terrorism and kidnapping.
He also urged State Houses of Assembly across the country to act swiftly in considering and passing the constitutional amendment to ensure its full implementation.
“The Senate has made history with this bold step. I urge the State Assemblies to follow suit and ensure this important constitutional amendment becomes a reality,” he added.
The proposed state police structure has continued to generate nationwide debate, with supporters arguing it will improve grassroots security, while critics have raised concerns over potential political misuse and coordination challenges.
