Gunmen Attempt Assassination of Accord Party Chairman in Osun Attack

Osun Accord Party chairman assassination attempt leaves Asimiyu Ajibola injured as gunmen open fire in Osogbo, prompting police investigation

Political tension was heightened in Osun State on Wednesday night after unknown gunmen allegedly attempted to assassinate the Chairman of the Accord Party in Osogbo Local Government Area, Asimiyu Ajibola, popularly known as Baba Isila.

The Osun Accord Party chairman assassination attempt occurred around 9:50 pm near the MDS area along the Osogbo Community Bank axis, where Ajibola and his associates were reportedly travelling in a blue Toyota Corolla when the attackers struck.

Eyewitnesses said the armed men, riding on a motorcycle, pursued the vehicle and opened fire, causing panic in the neighbourhood as residents fled for safety amid sustained gunshots.

One witness described the attack as coordinated, alleging that the gunmen chased the vehicle before unleashing a barrage of bullets on its occupants.

The victims reportedly managed to escape the scene and took refuge at the Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters in Osogbo before being rushed to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital for treatment.

The assassination attempt has since triggered widespread concern, with authorities confirming that Ajibola is receiving medical care and responding positively to treatment.

Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, condemned the attack, calling for a thorough investigation and urging security agencies to bring those responsible to justice.

He described the incident as unfortunate and stressed that it must not go unpunished.

The Osun State Police Command confirmed that it has launched a full-scale investigation into the shooting.

In a statement, Police Public Relations Officer DSP Abiodun Ojelabi said tactical and conventional units had been deployed immediately after the incident to track down the attackers.

The police noted that exhibits were recovered from the scene and are currently undergoing forensic analysis as part of ongoing investigations.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, condemned the attack and ordered a high-level probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident, assuring that all necessary resources would be deployed to apprehend the suspects.

Authorities urged residents to remain calm and provide useful information that could assist in identifying and arresting the perpetrators.

The incident adds to growing concerns over political violence in parts of the state as security agencies intensify efforts to restore order.
