Olumide Akpata ADC Violence condemned after leaders attacked in Benin City, highlighting threats to political participation in Nigeria
Former Labour Party governorship candidate Olumide Akpata has condemned the recent attack on African Democratic Congress, ADC, leaders in Benin City, Edo State, describing it as a deliberate attempt to discourage political participation.

The assault occurred on Tuesday during Akpata’s formal defection to the ADC, an event attended by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, Olumide Akpata said the violence “sends a dangerous signal that engaging in politics could put citizens at risk.”
Akpata further criticised Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo for dismissing the attack as an internal party matter, describing such remarks as premature and unhelpful.
He emphasised that the incident undermines public confidence in democratic processes and reinforces concerns about voter intimidation.
Leaders across Nigeria’s political spectrum have condemned the attack, calling on security agencies to safeguard democratic participation and ensure accountability for those responsible.
