Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan slams Senate ‘dictator’ Akpabio

Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan suspension ends as senator returns, calling Senate President Akpabio a dictator and insisting she owes no apology.

Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan suspension saga took a dramatic turn on Tuesday as the senator representing Kogi Central officially resumed legislative duties at the National Assembly—after months of controversy and legal wrangling.

Marking her return with strong words, Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of running the Red Chamber like a dictator, stating bluntly: “He treated me as though I were a servant in his house.”

Her office, located in Suite 2.05 of the Senate Wing, was formally unsealed by the Deputy Director of the National Assembly Sergeant-at-Arms, Alabi Adedeji, in a video posted on Tuesday.

“The office is hereby unsealed,” Adedeji announced, ending a suspension that has gripped national attention since March.

Upon resumption, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan made it clear she would not retreat quietly.

“In retrospect, it’s amazing how much we’ve paid—politically, emotionally, financially—over the past six months,” she said.

“But we survived the recall, the blackmail, and that crazy lady on Facebook. I owe no one any apology.”

She also praised her constituents and her husband for their steadfast support during what she described as “an institutional test of will and democracy.”

“We can’t cower in the face of injustice. No one is more Nigerian than the other. Senator Akpabio is not the governor of this place.”

The Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan suspension began on March 6, 2025, after a heated standoff with Senate leadership over the alleged reassignment of her seat.

She was accused of misconduct following her public protest during a Senate session on February 20.

Although her six-month suspension formally lapsed in early September, she was denied re-entry into the Senate due to continued pushback from leadership.

On July 4, the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled her suspension “excessive and unconstitutional,” strengthening her legal right to return. Yet efforts to notify the Senate of her intention to resume were initially rebuffed.

With Tuesday’s unsealing of her office, she is now physically reinstated, but questions remain over whether she will be allowed full participation when the Senate reconvenes.

Plenary, originally scheduled for September 23, has been pushed back to October 7, raising speculation that her presence on the floor may remain politically sensitive.

The rescheduled resumption of Senate sittings was confirmed via an internal memo signed by Chinedu Akubueze, Chief of Staff to the Senate President.

“Any inconvenience this short notice may cause is deeply regretted,” the memo stated.

Though no formal reason was offered, insiders claim the delay is meant to allow lawmakers to observe Independence Day celebrations on October 1.

However, critics say the move may be a tactic to buy time amid rising tensions.

With major legislative items pending—including oversight probes and reviews of executive appointments—analysts warn that the delay could stall critical parliamentary work.

The Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan suspension has exposed deep fissures within Nigeria’s upper chamber and raised broader concerns about transparency, democratic norms, and gender politics in governance.

Her outspoken stance has sparked national conversation, not only about the nature of leadership in the National Assembly, but also the limits of dissent within democratic institutions.
