Salihu Lukman says he wants Tinubu and APC defeated in 2027, urging opposition parties to unite and build a stronger political alternative
Former All Progressives Congress (APC) Vice Chairman Salihu Lukman has said he wants President Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC to be defeated in the 2027 general elections, while expressing frustration over what he described as weaknesses within the opposition.

Lukman made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Friday, where he assessed the political landscape ahead of the next general elections and criticised the current direction of opposition parties.
The former APC chieftain said he remained committed to seeing a change of government in 2027 but argued that the opposition must improve its strategy and move beyond individual ambitions if it hopes to challenge the ruling party.
“Look, as a person, I don’t have any restraint. I want APC and President Tinubu defeated out of government in 2027. But the way we are going about it, I’m frustrated,” Lukman said.
He expressed concern that opposition parties risk repeating the mistakes of the 2023 elections if they fail to achieve stronger cooperation and establish a political structure capable of holding elected officials accountable.
Lukman said the original goal of the opposition coalition efforts was not only to unite political leaders but also to develop a credible platform that could provide effective governance and accountability.
“As an advocate of the coalition and the unity of the opposition leaders, when we started about two years ago, the objectives were basically two: to get the opposition leaders united, and to also factor the need to build a party that can hold elected leaders accountable,” he said.
He warned that political calculations driven mainly by personal ambitions could weaken the opposition’s chances and leave voters without a strong alternative ahead of 2027.
According to Lukman, legal challenges arising from the 2023 elections alone would not be enough to produce political change, stressing the need for opposition parties to address internal divisions and present a clear vision to Nigerians.
“As it is today, I think no matter what comes out of the judicial process, I see us going back to 2023, repeating almost the same things that happened in 2023, and expect miracle to happen,” he added.

Lukman’s comments come as political parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections, with discussions around possible alliances, opposition coalitions and strategies to challenge the APC-led administration expected to intensify in the coming months.
