PDP Chieftain Defends Lamido’s Exclusion From National Convention

PDP Convention: Umar Sani defends former Bauchi governor’s exclusion, citing failure to follow party rules for national chairmanship contest

Umar Sani, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has defended the exclusion of former Sule Lamido from the Ibadan National Convention that produced the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC).

Sani said Lamido failed to follow proper party procedures to obtain the form for the national chairmanship position.

He explained that Lamido only showed interest on the day set for submission of completed forms and attempted to purchase the form at Wadata House instead of the party’s annex office, the Legacy House.

“These are issues we believe require determination by the Supreme Court,” Sani said, adding that the Court of Appeal did not properly consider the party’s arguments regarding Lamido’s failure to comply with constitutional procedures.

He noted that even though the court suggested that a space could be opened for Lamido to participate, the party maintained that allowing him to join without following due process would violate PDP’s constitution.

Lamido had previously approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, claiming that he was denied his fundamental right to contest the national chairmanship.

The Appeal Court Abuja recently declared the Ibadan National Convention illegal and maintained that the faction led by Senator Samuel Anyawu, backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, remains suspended.
